Abdu Maikaba eyes cup double with former NPFL champions

Plateau United new manager  coach Abdu Maikaba has made a pledge that he can lead his new side to the domestic double by winning the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) and the AITEO Cup in the upcoming season.

Maikaba completed a surprise move to become the manager of Plateau United after a two-season stint at Akwa United came to an end with the Promise Keepers’ failure to defend their Cup title.

He signed a two-year contract with an option of a third.

The 53-year-old trainer at the official ceremony to announce him as head coach of the club described Plateau United as the west African nation’s league champions after last season’s campaign ending abruptly amid a leadership crisis in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

Maikaba stated that his first challenge is to ensure that Plateau United “retain that (league) trophy.”

His second target is to win the AITEO Cup which he referred to as “the other trophy.”

“The first challenge is to retain that trophy. The second challenge is to make sure we win the other trophy, which is the AITEO Cup. It has been a while a Nigerian club has won the double, even with the inconclusive arrangement of our league of last season. It was confirmed that no team can win the two trophies, so we are here to do the double,” said Maikaba.

Plateau United general manager Pius Henwan revealed that the club has been tracking Maikaba for some time and are happy to finally hook him as head coach till 2020 — with an option of extending to 2021.

“We have been longing to bring him (Maikaba) to Plateau United, we have finally succeeded,” said Henwan.

“Today the person we are unveiling will win us the CAF Champions League.”

Maikaba worked as Akwa United manager between 2017 and 2018 and led the Akwa Ibom club to their first major domestic title — the AITEO Cup last year. He has previously managed Wikki Tourists.
