Table toppers, Plateau United Football Club of Jos consolidated their top spot on the Nigeria Professional Football League table after a two-one victory over struggling , Jigawa Golden Stars of Dutse in a match day twenty-two fixtures decided at the new Jos stadium Sunday.
After a dull and uninteresting start characterized by time wasting , the game later picked when Plateau United began to assert their authority on the game thereby forcing the visitors who were initially playing deep to come out of their shell.
This resulted in the first goal as a couple of passes in the edge of the visitors eighteen yard box saw the hardworking Plateau United midfielder , Oche Ochowechi blasting in a long footed shot in the half hour mark which caught goalkeeper Danjuma Paul and the entire Jigawa Golden Stars defence napping to give the home team a one goal lead.
The goal prompted the visitors to come out of their shield and this saw Plateau United upping their game especially in the midfield where the stand in captain , Benjamin Turba who is starting his first match of the season was in control of the middle of the pack with support from Isah Ndala and the workaholic Oche Ochowechi dominating possession.
However, it was Plateau United who doubled their lead through Tosin Omoyele who after his shot landed in the far side of the right hand corner of the lead to give his team a two goals cushion in the thirty-seven minutes.
As both sides resume for the second half, Plateau United approached lackadaisically , playing as nothing was at stake thereby allowing the visitors to come into the game.
Despite the introduction of the team highest goals scorer, Ibrahim Mustapha who is returning to the team after a two weeks absence due to a knee injury, Plateau United failed to increase their tally as they wasted some good scoring chances .
However, when everybody thought the game was over, Jigawa Golden Stars pulled one goal back after through Ibrahim Saleh after Plateau United defence went to sleep and failed to clear their line as the match eventually ended two-one in favour of the team.
The victory has now strengthened Plateau United grip on the league table with forty points, just a point over their title challengers Lobi stars and Rivers United who both picked vital away win away from home.
