CAF: Champions League and Confederation cup to make way for Super League next year
Felele247.com have scooped out that Africa’s football governing body CAF will cancel the CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup next year ahead of the inaugural CAF Super League.
The cancellation of the two African inter0club tournaments will give way to the new proposed Africa Super League and the CAF Super Cup
The CAF Super League will have 24 teams where they will be divided into 3 groups due to their geographical regions.
Plans are still embryonic and far from confirmed, but initial proposals – presented by Caf following guidance from Fifa – suggest 24 teams will contest three groups of eight teams ahead of a knockout stage starting with the Round of 16.
These teams will be taken from the best-ranked African clubs over the past few years, with groups to be played on a regional basis (North, Central/West, South/East).
In a bid to develop African football, Motsepe says that clubs wishing to compete will need to have both a youth academy as well as a woman’s side.
The essence of holding this tournament is the huge financial returns that will exceed the barrier of 200 million dollars, which will be used to develop and improve stadiums, infrastructure and the promotion of football in Africa
Last week, CAF President Patrice Motsepe met with Africa clubs football administrator in Douala for deliberation about the new league.
