LIKE SUNDAY OLISHEH, LIKE FINIDI GEORGE

LIKE SUNDAY OLISHEH, LIKE FINIDI GEORGE: A Tale Of Two Ex-Men.

On the 15th of July 2015, the man, Sunday Oliseh was appointed as the head coach of Nigeria Super Eagles. Upon his arrival in camp to resume duties, one of his first blunders was picking up a fight with the then captain, Vincent Enyeama and it extended to Mikel Obi. The fight with those men was the beginning of the downfall of the man who was taunted as the Josep Pep Guardiola of Nigeria and he could only last seven months as the coach. He resigned unceremoniously after some poor performances.

Finidi George became the head coach of the same team on the 29th of April 2024. He wasn’t the popular choice on the wishlist of many soccer loving Nigerians but he had the popular support of the decision makers at the helm of affairs. According to them, since he was the assistant to the former coach Josรฉ Peseiro , continuity was important, hence, his preference to the more experience coaches who applied for same position. In fact, at some point, news circulated that the man of the people, Emmanuel Amunike had been appointed. This led to wild celebration from different folks. Unfortunately, when the announcement was finally made, Finidi was the chosen one. Many soccer loving Nigerians were heartbroken but there was nothing they could do.

So Finidi resumed office with high expectations. Like Sunday Oliseh, one of his biggest undoing was “messing with” the captain of the team in the person of William Troost-Ekong and it extended to the Starboy of the team, Victor Osihmen. Then, poor results started playing out.

Oliseh and Finidi were both ex-players and ex-coaches of the same national team. They knew what was expected but they failed. Interestingly, the Super Eagles team was their first major national coaching position. So as much as inexperienced played a major role in their failures, something else did and even worse and that was poor relationship management skill.

In leadership, influence is very important.
