Ukraine FA urges FIFA to ban Iran for aiding Russia

The Ukrainian FA have released a message on their website indicating that they have decided to appeal to FIFA to exclude Iran from the Qatar 2022 World Cup, to be played this coming November.

It is the continuation of a complaint that was raised by Shakhtar Donetsk a few days ago, which called for the Iranians to be left out of tournament.

On that occasion, however, Sergiy Palkin called for Ukraine to take Iran’s place. This time, the Ukrainian Federation has not asked for such a thing.

They argue that Iran is supplying arms to Russia and is, therefore, in breach of articles 3 and 4 of FIFA’s statutes, which commit FIFA nations to respect human rights and fight discrimination.

The Ukrainian FA’s statement about Iran

“Taking into account media reports of systematic manifestations of human rights violations in Iran, which may violate the principles and norms of the FIFA Charter, taking into account UN Security Council Resolution 2231 on the imposition of sanctions on Iran and Iran’s alleged involvement in the Russian Federation’s military aggression against Ukraine, we appeal to FIFA with a proposal to consider the issue of excluding the Iranian national team from the 2022 FIFA World Cup,” was the full statement from the Ukrainian FA:
