Mo Salah injury latest as Egypt lose Liverpool star with huge AFCON blow confirmed
Mohamed Salah will miss Egypt’s next two Africa Cup of Nations games with a muscle injury, the Egyptian Football Federation have confirmed.
The 31-year-old Liverpool forward will miss Egypt’s side’s final group game against Cape Verde on Monday and the following round of 16 fixture if his side qualifies from their group.
Salah was forced off just before half-time in Egypt’s Africa Cup of Nations draw with Ghana on Thursday. He appeared to be experiencing discomfort in his hamstring and was unable to continue with Mostafa Fathi replacing him.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp spoke to Salah on Thursday evening and confirmed the club were awaiting news.
He said: “In the moment it was a shock. He felt it and we all know how rarely Mo needs to go off so there was definitely something. I don’t have any more information right now.”
Asked if Liverpool would send medical staff to the tournament to assist, Klopp added: “We will see. It depends on what the diagnosis is.
“They do will an ultrasound and an MRI and then we will know what it is and what Egypt plans. It’s too early.”
Salah scored from the penalty spot in Egypt’s opening AFCON game to extend his national goalscoring record. He has 54 goals in 98 appearances for his country.
Salah has never won the AFCON with Egypt ending runners-up in both 2017 and 2021.
Egypt are next in action against Cape Verde on Monday where a win will guarantee passage to the knockout phase.
